Avoid extremes – Do not let plants get extremely wet or dry
> If plants are excessively wet, move them to the top shelf and space out in order to aid in drying
Check moisture regularly on warm and/or windy days. Plants dry out quickly in these conditions, spot watering may be necessary.
Do not water all plants alike
> Several plants like drier conditions (e.g. Begonias, Geraniums, and Flowering Vinca) allow these to dry between watering.
Do not water geranium blossoms, doing so will cause them to mold
> Use a watering wand to water the soil and leaves below the blossom.
Pick off dead blooms before watering to prevent mold
Do not water in “wet weather” unless necessary (check soil dryness)
Dispose of plants that are dying, they will transmit diseases to other plants
Remove protective sleeves from baskets and containers
Monitor the amount of sun, each plant variety handles the sun differently
Check the plant care tag before placing a variety in the sun
Impatiens handle morning sun but will wilt and/or die in full sun
Geraniums, Petunias, and Marigolds like a lot of sun
MAINTAIN A “FIRST IN/FIRST OUT” INVENTORY
Place existing product in front, do not allow old product to get hidden behind new product
Do not store inventory on shipping racks
Use new product as back-stock
The goal is 100% product turnover
USE ATTRACTIVE DISPLAYS TO INCREASE SALES
A well maintained display increases impulse buying
Consolidate all partial flats to make room for new product
Be creative; this is a chance to “showcase” your merchandising skills
